Fuel > Fuel Cut Off Kit

A fuel cut-off system isolates the petrol supply from the rest of the fuel system in specific circumstances, typically in the event of a collision where an inertia switch detects the impact and automatically cuts the supply, or manually for security purposes or for laid-up storage. The inertia valve addresses a specific weakness of the factory fuel system, that the electric SU fuel pump fitted to every car in the range will otherwise continue to deliver fuel at pressure to a ruptured line until the ignition is switched off manually, so in a collision where the fuel line is damaged the pump continues pumping from the tank into the engine bay until stopped, with the fire risk this represents being well recognised. For any classic MG in regular road use, an inertia cut-off is a sensible addition that requires no modification to the existing fuel system and provides a meaningful safety improvement for very little cost or effort. How the Inertia Valve Works The valve contains a spring-loaded internal mass that holds the fuel passage open under normal conditions, a sudden deceleration of the kind associated with a collision overcoming the spring and allowing the mass to close the valve and hold it closed. Because the mechanism is mechanical rather than electrical, the valve operates regardless of ignition state, battery condition, or car polarity, so it suits both positive and negative earth cars without any wiring changes. Once triggered, the valve is reset by a small push-button on the housing that returns the mass to its normal position and restores fuel flow, and in normal service the valve offers negligible restriction to fuel flow and does not affect carburettor performance. The standard arrangement on every modern car, the inertia switch was introduced as factory equipment on later British cars during the 1970s, but most classic MGs left the factory without one and the retrofit is a worthwhile safety upgrade. Manual Cut-Off Switches Manual cut-off switches provide a means to isolate the petrol supply deliberately rather than automatically, the principal applications being security where the switch is hidden in a non-obvious location making the car difficult to start without knowing where it is, and laid-up storage where the petrol supply is isolated during the storage period preventing any slow leakage or vapour-related issues. Road-use kits provide a discreet cockpit-mounted pull handle, while for competition use most regulations require a cut-off with a clearly marked external actuator operable by marshals even if the driver is incapacitated. The manual switch can be wired or plumbed in series with an inertia switch on installations using both, both needing to be open or closed for fuel to flow. Installation & Application The valve fits in the fuel line between the tank and the pump, or between the pump and the carburettors, and is clamped to the chassis or bulkhead in a location where the reset button can be reached. Correct orientation matters, as the valve has a preferred trigger axis marked on the body and should be mounted so that a forward-direction impact triggers the mass, and it should be mounted solidly to the car structure rather than left to float on the flexible fuel hose itself, so that the valve feels the vehicle's deceleration rather than hose flexion. For inertia-switch installations on later cars where the cut-off is electrical rather than mechanical, the switch is mounted in a vertical orientation in a location experiencing meaningful deceleration in an impact, typically the front bulkhead or inner wing, wired in series with the pump's positive feed. The kit is typically a universal-fitment device requiring no car-specific variant, supplied complete with the valve, mounting bracket, and the hose tails to splice it into the existing fuel line, with a short length of ethanol-compatible hose required to complete the installation. The valve is not a substitute for a proper fire extinguisher in the car or for the battery-isolator cut-off switch that competition regulations typically require, it is a supplementary safety device for road-going classic MGs.
