This section covers the door locking and operating hardware for the MGA, the door latches that secure the door closed, the lock-operation mechanism (differing between roadster and coupé), the hinges and hinge-alignment hardware, the sidescreen attachment socket, and the complete UNF fastener set for door assembly.
Door latches, handed L/H and R/H
Door latches are supplied as handed pairs, left-hand and right-hand are separate items, matching the door they mount to. The latch is the mechanism that engages with the body-mounted striker post to hold the door shut, releasing when the lock mechanism (pull cord on the roadster, external handle on the coupé) is operated. Latches wear over decades of service, the latch jaw itself, the internal pivot and spring, and the lock-linkage attachment points, and a worn latch causes inconsistent door closing, rattles at speed, and in severe cases failure to stay latched under body flex.
Replacement restores correct operation and security.
Roadster door pull cord, factory-original locking
The interior door pull cable is the service-replacement cord for the MGA roadster's factory-original door lock operation. The roadster has no external door handles, the door is opened by reaching inside through the sidescreen flap and pulling the plastic-covered pull cord inside the door pocket. The cord links to the door latch through the internal door mechanism.
The original pull cord is vulnerable to wear and perishing over the years, and replacement is the correct service to restore factory operation. The cord is plastic-covered black, matching the factory specification. For roadsters, this is the primary lock-operation service item.
Coupé interior door pull with Bakelite handgrip
The interior door pull for the MGA coupé is a different item, the coupé has wind-down windows and external door handles, so the interior pull functions as a grab handle for closing the door from inside rather than as a lock-operation cord. The coupé door pull features a Bakelite handgrip of the same type found on some BMC saloon cars of the period, a small but visible period-correct detail for coupé restoration.
The chrome-plated interior door handles and window winder handles on coupés are standardised Nuffield/BMC types, shared with other period BMC cars rather than MGA-specific.
Hinges and hinge alignment hardware
MGA door hinges are supplied as the door-mounting pair. The hinges are body-coloured from factory and mount at the front edge of the door, allowing it to pivot open. Additional hinge-related hardware covers door alignment during fitting: the hinge plate is the backing plate carrying the hinge's body-side mounting points; the hinge shim is used between the hinge and the door or body to correct door alignment during assembly. Correct door fit requires both the hinge mounting points and any required shims to be in place; over-tightened or missing shims cause the door to hang incorrectly, resulting in uneven gaps against the body or difficulty closing.
Sidescreen socket and top rail
The sidescreen socket is the receiving socket mounted on the door that accepts the sidescreen's fixing stud, the point at which the roadster sidescreen attaches to the door top. On 1500 and early Twin Cam sidescreens, the front sidescreen attached to a stud on the inside door trim; on 1600 cars (and Twin Cam from chassis 2193), the sidescreen fixing stud was relocated to the door top rail.
Replacement sockets restore correct sidescreen attachment. The MGA door top rail (L/H) is a structural rail along the top of the door, forming the door's upper edge. The rail is a steel pressing, handed L/H and R/H, and is the mounting point for the sidescreen socket and for the door capping trim on coupés (where the chrome-plated finisher runs around the upper door aperture above the waistline).
UNF fastener range for door assembly
Complete UNF hardware for door latch and hinge assembly: 1/4 UNF includes recessed countersunk-head screws (3/4" length), plain large washers, locking spring washers, and plain zinc nuts for hinge and latch mounting. 10-32 UNF includes recessed pan-head screws (1/2" length), No. 10 plain large washers, locking spring washers, and plain zinc nuts for smaller door-hardware fixings.
Ordering considerations
Confirm roadster or coupé before ordering, the interior door pull is variant-specific (pull cord for roadster, Bakelite handgrip pull for coupé). Confirm whether the car uses the pre-1600 or post-1600 sidescreen attachment system before ordering sidescreen sockets; the fixing locations differ between the 1500/early Twin Cam and the 1600 onwards.
