This section covers the windscreen assembly components for the MGA roadster and coupé, the glass, the chrome-plated brass frame and stanchions, the combined support-and-grab-handle screen stays, the Auster manufacturer's badge, the windscreen brackets with hood attachment pegs, the sunvisor tint strip, the glazing seal, and the complete set of fasteners required for assembly and refurbishment.
Roadster windscreen glass, clear laminated
The MGA roadster windscreen glass is supplied as a direct-fit clear laminated pane, matching the factory Triplex laminated specification. The glass fits into the chrome-plated brass Auster frame with a rubber glazing seal around its perimeter, creating a sealed and structurally-retained assembly. Laminated construction is the safe factory specification, the two glass layers bonded to a plastic interlayer crack but do not shatter in an impact, protecting occupants from flying glass.
Coupé windscreen frame (without glass)
The coupé windscreen frame (without glass) is supplied as a restoration item for coupé cars. The coupé windscreen is markedly more curved than the roadster's, mounted directly into the modified front shroud channel rather than on stanchions. Supplying the frame without glass allows the restorer to source period-correct laminated glass locally or re-glaze using the existing glass from a donor car.
Auster frame and identification badge
The roadster windscreen frame is the chrome-plated brass frame made by Auster, the original manufacturer's identification. The Auster badge plate is the small identification badge fitted to the frame, with the Auster badge rivet that secures it in place. Both are period-correct items for concours restoration of the roadster windscreen frame.
Screen stays (combined support and grab handles)
The screen stays (L/H and R/H) are the combined support and grab handle items fitted on each side of the roadster windscreen. They attach to the scuttle at one end and to the windscreen stanchions at the other, providing both structural support for the windscreen frame and a grab handle for the passenger in the open car. The screen stays wear over decades, the chrome plating thins, the mounting points corrode where they penetrate the body, and the stay itself can fatigue at stress points. The stays are handed L/H and R/H.
Windscreen brackets with hood pegs
The bracket + peg (L/H and R/H) items are handed windscreen brackets that include the hood attachment peg, the peg on the windscreen frame that engages with the front hoodstick socket when the hood is erected. Two pegs (one on each side) secure the hood to the windscreen frame, providing the primary hood-to-screen attachment. From chassis 57100 (September 1958), the factory changed the windscreen hood pegs from plated brass to plated mild steel, a small production change that affects exact factory-correct restoration but has no functional consequence.
Windscreen bottom bracket and plate
The windscreen bottom bracket mounts the windscreen frame's stanchion feet to the scuttle. The windscreen plate is the backing plate for windscreen mounting points. Both are corrosion-prone because of their location at the bottom of the stanchions where rainwater and road spray collect.
Sun visor tint strip, MGA / T-Type
The sunvisor tint strip (MGA / T-Type) is a tinted strip fitted to the top of the windscreen, providing sun-glare reduction for the driver. The item is shared between the MGA and earlier T-Type cars, a period accessory rather than a factory-fitted item on all cars. Many MGAs have had this fitted as a period accessory over the years.
Glazing seal, bolt kit and fasteners
The glazing seal is the rubber seal that fits between the windscreen glass and the Auster frame, creating the sealed and retained glass-to-frame joint. The bolt kit W/SCR MGA provides the complete set of windscreen-specific bolts and mounting hardware. Additional UNF fasteners include No. 10 UNF recessed countersunk-head screws (7/8" length), raised-countersunk screws (1" and 3/4" lengths), plain large washers, and domed nuts (for finished external appearance). 2BA screws (British Association thread, the period-correct small-fastener specification for some windscreen-area work) are also stocked. Grab handle packing is the packing shim used at the screen stay mounting points.
Ordering considerations
Confirm roadster or coupé before ordering, the glass and frame are variant-specific.
