MGF & TF Front Wings & Doors

Bodywork > Front Wings & Doors

The front wing assemblies are shared between MGF and MG TF, a single handed LH and RH pair covers both models. The wings are bolted rather than welded to the bodyshell, secured by sixteen fitting screws around the wing perimeter (along the top edge, front edge, and around the wheel arch), which makes wing replacement a realistic panel-repair task with basic tools. Wing edge protection strips are catalogued as small accessories for the leading edges where stone chip damage is most likely. The two front wing support struts (catalogued separately) hold the wing in shape at the front of the car where it meets the bumper cover. Wheel Arch Liners, Model-Specific and Handed Unlike the wings themselves, the wheel arch liners inside the wings are model-specific, MGF and MG TF use different liners because the inner wing geometry differs slightly between the two models. Four handed variants are catalogued: MGF RH and LH, and MG TF RH and LH. Wheel arch liners are secured by plastic clips (×4 per liner) and fixing nuts, the latter changing specification at MGF VIN WD026606/WD026607, pre-WD026606 MGFs use one nut, post-WD026607 MGFs and all MG TF use a different nut. The liners protect the inner wing from road spray, stone chips, and water that would otherwise corrode the inner panel over time, a damaged or missing liner should be replaced to protect the metalwork behind. Doors, Complete Assembly or Skin Only Door panels are catalogued in two tiers. Complete door assemblies (handed LH and RH) provide the full door as a finished pressing including inner and outer skins, the option chosen where a door has suffered structural damage from collision. Door skins alone (also handed LH and RH) are the outer panel only, for panel-repair specialists who can fold the hem flange onto an existing inner door frame, a skilled technique that preserves the original door's hardware and mounting geometry while replacing only the visible external panel. Doors are shared between MGF and MG TF in basic pressing. Door Hinges, Upper and Lower, Handed Door hinges are catalogued as four separate items per car: upper RH, upper LH, lower RH, lower LH. Each hinge is retained by five screws with thick plain washers, twenty screws and twenty washers per car in total across the four hinge positions. Hinge wear over time produces door sag (the door drops slightly at the latch end, resulting in poor shut-line alignment); replacement of the hinges addresses this far more permanently than attempting to re-align worn hinges. Handedness is critical for ordering. Door Check Arm and Water Shedder The door check arm holds the door at intermediate positions when open and prevents the door from flying further than its design travel. Check arms are catalogued as complete assemblies (×2 per car), along with their pivot pins, mounting screws, and door-side bump stops. The check arm pin changed at MGF VIN WD035071/WD035072, pre-WD035071 MGFs use one pin, post-WD035072 MGFs and all MG TF use an improved pin (likely a durability revision addressing early check arm wear). Two alternative check arm screw specifications are catalogued, the later being a direct-fit service alternative. Handed water shedders, the plastic sheets that sit between the door skin and the interior trim card, are catalogued individually. A torn or badly-fitted water shedder allows water that enters the door cavity (normal during rain) to drain into the door interior instead of down through the intended drain holes, risking trim card damage and premature door corrosion. Replacing the shedder whenever the door card is off for any other work is worthwhile.
