The radiator top mounts are visible in the front luggage compartment when the bonnet is opened. Standard fixings are functional but unfinished in appearance. Polished or anodised radiator top mount covers replace the standard fixings with more visually appealing items, contributing to a detailed engine bay and luggage compartment presentation.
This is a purely cosmetic modification that takes moments to fit.
Radiator Mounting
The radiator on the MGF and TF is mounted at the front of the car in the nose section beneath the bonnet. The radiator is a copper and brass cross-flow type with moulded plastic end tanks, mounted in rubber bushes, the bottom located in the front body member and the top located in the bonnet locking platform.
The standard rubber top mounts deteriorate with age and engine bay heat, allowing the radiator to vibrate and potentially chafe against the body mounting points. This vibration can eventually cause fatigue cracking in the plastic end tanks, leading to coolant leaks.
Uprated Mounts
Polished aluminium radiator top mounts replace the standard rubber items with a more rigid and visually attractive mounting. They provide a firmer radiator location that reduces vibration and the associated risk of end tank fatigue. The aluminium mounts also add an engine bay detailing touch visible when the bonnet is raised. Fitment is a direct replacement for the standard rubber mounts using the existing mounting points.
