The tonneau cover on an MGF or MG TF has two distinct roles: the hood cover (sometimes called a 'half tonneau') tidies the appearance of the folded-down hood when the car is being driven, while the full-length tonneau covers the entire cockpit as weather and security protection when the car is parked. MGOC Spares catalogues both, in a range of colours and materials, alongside pre-1997 MGF variants for early cars and the full set of studs, screws and rivets needed to secure them to the body.
Hood Covers, MGF and MG TF
The Club hood cover (also known as the half tonneau) is the stretched vinyl cover that pulls over the folded hood when the roof is down, concealing the hood material and giving the car a cleaner, more finished appearance with the top stowed. The T804 series covers MGF and MG TF cars in six off-the-shelf colours: Black (T804A), Blue (T804B), Cream (T804C), Green (T804G), Red (T804M) and Beige (T804X). Black covers are trimmed in OE-quality Superior Vinyl; coloured covers use Everflex in the same grade. Contrasting coloured bindings or alternative non-standard colours can be supplied to special order to match a bespoke retrim, contact MGOC Spares with the required combination.
Hood Covers, MGF Up to 1997
A dedicated hood cover variant is catalogued for early MGF cars up to 1997, which used slightly different body fixing positions from later cars. The early variant is currently stocked in Black and Red, with other colours available to special order.
Owners of pre-1997 MGF cars should verify the fixing arrangement against the cover specification before ordering, using the later T804 variant on an early car will not line up with the original stud positions on the rear bulkhead and B-post.
Full-Length Tonneau Cover
The full-length tonneau cover (T808 series) covers the entire cockpit area and provides proper weather and security protection when the car is parked with the hood stowed, a feature that MG Rover never offered as a factory option. It is catalogued in Black (T808A), Blue (T808B) and Beige (T808X), in the same material grades as the hood cover. A key practical feature is that the full-length cover can be zipped back to half-length when the car is being driven, so a single cover serves both functions. Because the full-length tonneau was not a factory fitment, a separate fitting kit (T808FK) is required to install the additional studs and fastener positions in the bodyshell, this must be ordered alongside the cover itself.
Studs, Rivets and Fixings
The hood cover and half-tonneau are secured by a combination of studs and shoulder studs at the rear bulkhead and B-post: three HYR10002 hood cover fixing studs and two EYR000050 shoulder studs per car. Three AB606143 screws secure the studs to the rear bulkhead finisher, and rivets mount the B-post studs. A VIN breakpoint applies to the B-post rivet: DYQ10013 fits MGF and MG TF to VIN 4D619957, while DYQ000100 fits MG TF from 4D619958 onwards. Fresh fixings at reassembly are sensible, the original rivets cannot be reused.
Ordering Considerations
Three pieces of information matter: the car's era (pre-1997 MGF requires the early hood cover variant; later MGF and MG TF use the T804 series), the chosen colour and finish (off-the-shelf Black, Blue, Cream, Green, Red or Beige, or a special-order colour), and whether a full-length tonneau is wanted alongside, in which case the T808FK fitting kit is essential. For coordinated cabin presentation, the hood cover colour typically matches the interior trim leather or carpet, though a contrasting colour is sometimes chosen for visual impact. Hood care products apply to tonneau covers as well as hoods, and a twice-yearly clean and reproof keeps the material supple and watertight.
