Q Parts Parabolic Leaf Springs

Suspension & Steering > Parabolic Leaf Springs

A standard interleaved leaf spring is a stack of flat leaves that share load by stacking and rubbing together. A parabolic spring is a fundamentally different design: each leaf is rolled to a tapered, parabolic profile so the load is carried in bending rather than in inter-leaf friction. The result is a spring that does the same axle-locating job as the original, but with markedly different ride characteristics. The Q Parts parabolic range brings that engineering shift to the classic MG family. Engineering Principle Q Parts parabolic springs use fewer leaves than the standard equivalent, each tapered along its length so the cross-section reduces from the centre toward the eyes. Removing the inter-leaf friction that defines a standard pack produces a softer initial response over small road inputs, while the geometry of the parabola gives a progressive rate that firms up as the spring is loaded. The leaves are produced from spring-grade steel with a controlled heat-treatment profile, and friction pads are positioned where contact is unavoidable to suppress noise. Spring Rates Parabolic springs are offered in rates appropriate to the cars in the range, lighter rates suited to standard-weight applications, higher rates for heavier or V8-engined variants, and lowered options for owners who want a more planted stance and a reduced centre of gravity built into the spring geometry itself. Parabolic Spring Kits Complete kits are offered for the cars where parabolic conversion is most often specified, supplied with uprated polyurethane bushes throughout. The polyurethane bush choice is deliberate, the lower friction and reduced compliance of the parabolic spring is undermined by aged rubber bushes, and the polyurethane option locks the geometry where the spring can do its work. Why Telescopic Dampers Matter A parabolic spring delivers most of its benefit when paired with telescopic dampers rather than the original lever-arm type. The lever-arm damper does not provide the damping speed range the parabolic spring's softer initial movement asks for, and the result of a parabolic spring on tired lever arms is a car that wallows over body roll inputs while still riding harshly over small bumps. Q Parts parabolic spring kits should therefore be specified alongside a matched telescopic damper conversion. Telescopic Damper Conversion Kits The Q Parts range includes matched telescopic damper conversion kits front and rear, sourced from established performance damper manufacturers. Specifying springs and dampers as a coordinated system is the route to extracting the full parabolic benefit, front and rear damping rates work together to give the ride and handling improvement the spring alone cannot deliver. Benefit on the Road Drivers describe the change as the car suddenly riding the road rather than being shaken by it. Small surface imperfections, broken edges, expansion joints, ripples on the approach to roundabouts, disappear from the cabin almost entirely. Larger inputs are absorbed progressively rather than crashing through, and with matched telescopic dampers fitted, body control on motorway expansion joints and B-road compressions is meaningfully sharper. Fitment Q Parts parabolic spring kits are dimensioned to the original eye-to-eye and shackle specification of the cars they fit, so the springs themselves install using the existing shackles, U-bolts and mounting points. Telescopic damper conversion kits include the brackets, fixings and instructions needed to install onto the original chassis without modification beyond the bracket fitment. Each component is developed in-house by the MGOC Spares product engineering team and supported by the brand's extended warranty programme. The MGOC Spares Q Parts Parabolic Leaf Spring range encompasses parabolic springs in the rates appropriate to the classic MG range, complete parabolic spring kits with uprated polyurethane bushes, and matched telescopic damper conversion kits for front and rear, supported by expert technical advice on combining springs and dampers for your application. Owners specifying parabolic springs alongside a deliberate ride-height reduction should also see the Q Parts Lowering Kit range. The Q Parts range is under active development by the MGOC Spares product engineering team, with new lines added regularly as the brand expands across the engine, cooling, fuelling, suspension, charging, weather equipment and interior categories. If a Q Parts component you need is not yet listed online, please contact our team at sales@mgocspares.co.uk or 01954 230928, we will be pleased to advise on equivalent parts available now and on forthcoming additions to the Q Parts range.
