Q Parts Charging

Electrical > Charging

The charging system on a classic British car is a closed loop: the alternator or dynamo generates current, the regulator manages voltage, and the battery stores capacity for starting and ancillary loads. Period components were specified for period demands, and a tired example of any of the three will leave the others working harder than they should. The Q Parts charging range groups together components needed to bring the system back into balance for modern ownership, including the period battery specifications that can be increasingly difficult to source elsewhere. Period Battery Specifications Several classic British cars from the BMC and British Leyland period were originally specified with batteries that have become awkward to source on the broader market, most notably twin six-volt batteries wired in series to deliver the twelve-volt system supply, an arrangement that is part of what makes a chrome bumper sports car feel period-correct under the bonnet. The Q Parts charging range exists specifically to keep this supply line open for owners maintaining originality, as well as supporting the more conventional twelve-volt specifications used elsewhere in the range. Why Battery Specification Matters A battery is the foundation of any electrical diagnostic. A half-charged battery produces symptoms across the entire electrical system that can easily be mistaken for component faults, flickering instruments, slow cranking, intermittent indicator failures, headlamp dimming under load. On classic cars where the loom and earth path are already at the upper end of their service life, a strong battery is the first defence against false-positive electrical faults. Specifying Twin Series Batteries Specifying batteries in matched pairs of equivalent manufacture and age is essential when running a series-connected twin-battery system, mixing a fresh battery with a tired one quickly drags the new battery down to the level of the old. The Q Parts range is offered both individually for replacing one half of a tired pair, and as matched pairs for a complete refresh. Engineering and Construction Q Parts batteries use modern plate construction within the period casing format, delivering greater cold-cranking performance and lower self-discharge than the period equivalents they replace. Specifications are correct for cars with original ventilation arrangements on the battery boxes, and dimensions are matched to the original battery box to fit without modification. Fitment Q Parts batteries are dimensioned to original battery box dimensions and offered with the standard terminal arrangement. Installation is a direct replacement of the original batteries using the existing series strap (where applicable) and main feed cable. Each battery is supplied through the MGOC Spares Q Parts range and supported by the appropriate manufacturer warranty. The MGOC Spares Q Parts Charging range encompasses period-specification batteries for classic British car applications, including the twin six-volt series arrangement used on earlier chrome-bumper sports cars and contemporary models, supported by expert technical advice on twin-six-volt charging system maintenance and modern battery specification. For higher-output alternators that complement modern battery upgrades, see the Q Parts Alternator range. The Q Parts range is under active development by the MGOC Spares product engineering team, with new lines added regularly as the brand expands across the engine, cooling, fuelling, suspension, charging, weather equipment and interior categories. If a Q Parts component you need is not yet listed online, please contact our team at sales@mgocspares.co.uk or 01954 230928, we will be pleased to advise on equivalent parts available now and on forthcoming additions to the Q Parts range.
