The Rover 3528cc V8 fitted to the factory MGB GT V8 is supplied as a reconditioned exchange unit. Because the engine was used in many other applications throughout its long production life, and because the MG version uses several factory-specific components that differ from later Rover variants, the supply route for a complete engine is more involved than for the four-cylinder MGB.
Reconditioned Exchange
Engines are reconditioned on a one-for-one exchange basis: the customer's existing engine is returned in part-exchange and is reconditioned to original specification. The reconditioned unit is supplied less ancillaries, flywheel, starter motor, distributor, manifolds, water pump and ancillary brackets, which are transferred from the original engine. This keeps the cost of a rebuild within reach and allows MG-specific items such as the unique inlet manifold adaptor, distributor drive gear and rocker covers to be retained from the original car.
Engine Identification before Ordering
Before placing an exchange order, the engine number should be checked. Genuine MGB GT V8 engines have an eight-figure number without any letter prefix, beginning 4860. The number is stamped on a plate at the rear of the cylinder block, on the left-hand side near the bellhousing flange. Engines bearing other Rover prefixes (Rover P5B, Rover SD1, Range Rover, Land Rover and so on) are not original V8 units and may differ in cam profile, distributor drive gear, inlet manifold arrangement and accessory mounting points.
Cars fitted with a non-original Rover V8 should be identified at quotation stage so that the correct rebuild specification can be agreed.
