Reconditioned MGB GT V8 engines are supplied on an exchange basis, with the customer's existing engine taken in part-exchange and reconditioned to original Rover 3528cc V8 specification. The reconditioned unit is supplied less ancillaries (flywheel, starter motor, distributor, manifolds, water pump and accessory brackets), which are transferred from the original engine to retain the V8-specific items unique to the MG application.
Reconditioning Specification
A reconditioned engine is rebuilt to factory specification. The aluminium cylinder block is checked for cracks and core integrity, the cast-iron dry cylinder liners are renewed where necessary, and the crankshaft is re-ground and supplied with appropriate undersize main and big-end bearings. Pistons and rings are renewed to original V8 specification, these are MG-specific items not interchangeable with Rover-spec components. Cylinder heads are reconditioned with renewed valves, valve guides and valve seats, with lead-free seat inserts available where required for unleaded fuel use.
Camshaft and tappets are renewed or refaced as condition dictates, retaining the original V8 cam profile.
Identification Before Order
MGOC Spares can only recondition genuine MGB GT V8 engines on a like-for-like exchange basis. Customers should verify the engine number before order: factory V8 engines have an eight-figure number beginning 4860, stamped on a plate at the rear of the block on the left-hand side near the bellhousing. Engines bearing later Rover prefixes (P5B, SD1, Range Rover and so on) can be reconditioned but the rebuild specification, parts availability and final price will differ. Discussing the engine's identity at quotation stage avoids surprises later in the process.
Lead Times and Availability
Reconditioned V8 engine production is small-volume work, and lead times for reconditioned exchange units can be considerable depending on the quality of the unit returned and the workload of the engine builder. Owners should plan their restoration accordingly.
