MGB badges evolved across the production run with the car’s changing identity, from BMC through British Leyland to the final years, and the correct badge for each position varies by year. An incorrect badge on an otherwise well-restored car is immediately visible to anyone familiar with the model, and missing or faded badges diminish the impression of an otherwise well-presented exterior.
Grille & Boot Lid Badges
The MG grille badge changed with each grille design. The pre-1970 slatted grille carried a shield-shaped badge on the false nosepiece with silver letters and octagon on a red background. The 1970 to 1972 recessed grille had the MG badge fixed in the centre of the recessed panel. The 1973 to 1974 honeycomb grille used a traditional shield badge.
On rubber bumper cars, the badge sat at the top of the bumper centre bar. Badge colours changed from silver on red to gold on black during the 1975 Jubilee year, then to silver on black from January 1976, with a red badge on the 1980 Limited Edition. The roadster boot lid and GT tailgate MG badge followed a similar colour sequence, a one-piece plastic badge from 1970, metal in gold from January 1975, silver from January 1976, and red on the 1980 LE.
Boot & C-Post Badges
The GT carried separate GT and B letter badges on the bootlid on earlier cars, with a combined MGBGT badge on later cars. C-post badges were officially fitted from September 1976, though some cars received them before this date. The MGB boot script was fitted to roadsters throughout the chrome bumper period.
House Badges & Grille Badges
British Leyland house badges were fitted from approximately 1970, initially in silver on a blue background, secured with blind fixings, changing to blue on silver self-adhesive items from approximately 1972 to 1976. Grille badges differ by year, the pre-1970 shield-shaped badge carried silver letters and octagon on a red background, while the 1972 to 1974 honeycomb grille used a different red badge design. A separate V8 grille badge plinth was fitted to the GT V8.
Body Stripes & Letter Sets
Body stripe sets are available for the 1975 Jubilee Edition and the 1980 Limited Edition in both Roadster and GT specifications. Chrome and stainless letter sets, Union Jack badges, chequered flag badges, and the MGB boot script are all available. Badge fixings include both blind-fix and push-on types depending on the badge and position.
