The Classic Mini’s transmission is unique in that the gearbox is housed within the engine sump, sharing the same oil supply as the engine. This space-saving arrangement was integral to Issigonis’s original design and remained fundamentally unchanged throughout the Mini’s 41-year production life.
However, the gearbox, clutch and drivetrain components evolved through several distinct specifications, and identifying the correct variant is essential when ordering replacement parts.
Gearbox
Early Minis used a three-synchromesh four-speed gearbox. From 1968 this was replaced by a four-synchromesh unit offering synchromesh on all forward gears, eliminating the need to double-declutch into first. The four-synchromesh gearbox remained in production to the end of the Mini’s life, with detail changes along the way. A four-speed automatic gearbox was also offered across much of production.
When selecting gearbox components, the key identification points are the gearbox type (three-synchro, four-synchro or automatic), the engine size, and whether the car is rod-change or remote-change.
Clutch
All manual Classic Minis use a single dry plate clutch operated hydraulically. The most important identification point for clutch component selection is whether the car has a pre-Verto diaphragm clutch (up to 1982) or the later Verto clutch (from 1982 on A+ engines). The two types use different flywheels, pressure plates, driven plates and release bearings, and are not interchangeable. The clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder specifications also changed across production.
Drivetrain
The Classic Mini’s front-wheel-drive layout transmits power from the gearbox to the front wheels via driveshafts with constant velocity (CV) joints. Driveshaft lengths and CV joint specifications differ between models, and it is important to confirm whether your car has drum or disc front brakes as this affects the hub and driveshaft assembly.
MGOC Spares Transmission Range
The MGOC Spares Classic Mini transmission range covers clutch kits, clutch master and slave cylinders, gearbox bearings, synchromesh rings, selector components, gear sets, driveshafts, CV joints and boots, and all associated seals and fixings for manual and automatic transmissions.
