The factory-pattern OE exhaust system reproduces the original V8 specification in mild steel construction. The system comprises a front Y-piece (joining the two manifold downpipes into a single front section), a centre silencer box, and a rear silencer box with integral tail pipe and trim. The geometry, silencer internals and final tail-pipe trim are matched to the original specification, giving the characteristic V8 exhaust note when fitted to a standard engine.
System Sections
Individual sections are available for spot replacement where only part of the system has corroded, typically the rear silencer, which is the most exposed and corrosion-prone component. Front Y-piece, centre silencer and rear silencer can each be ordered separately, alongside the connecting clamps and hanging brackets that hold the system to the chassis.
Hanging Brackets
Rubber-isolated hanging brackets support the exhaust at the rear silencer area and along the chassis run, preventing vibration transmission into the bodyshell while accommodating the exhaust system's thermal expansion in service. Worn or perished hangers cause the exhaust to droop and can lead to clearance issues with the road surface or with the rear axle in extreme suspension travel.
Service Life
Mild steel exhaust systems on classic vehicles typically last several years before corrosion makes renewal necessary. Cars used regularly in dry conditions get longer service from a mild steel system; cars used briefly in damp conditions and stored damp suffer accelerated corrosion. For the longest service life, see the Stainless Steel Exhaust Systems sub-section under Upgrades and Alternatives.
MGOC Spares
MGOC Spares supplies factory-pattern mild steel exhaust systems and individual sections, hanging brackets, clamps and all associated fixings for the MGB GT V8.
