Copper-nickel brake pipework, often called Cunifer or simply copper pipe in classic-vehicle parlance, is a corrosion-resistant alternative to the original steel brake pipework. The alloy contains copper, nickel and iron in proportions that resist corrosion in road environments while retaining the strength needed for brake hydraulic pressures. It does not corrode externally as steel does, even under road salt exposure, and offers service life measured in decades rather than years.
Installation Benefits
Beyond the corrosion resistance, copper-nickel pipe is significantly easier to flare and form than steel, making installation more straightforward for both professional and competent home mechanics. The pipe bends to the desired routings without kinking, and double-flares (the standard brake pipe end fitting) form cleanly with standard flaring tools. The combination of easier installation and longer service life makes copper-nickel a practical upgrade during any major brake work.
Pipe Kits
Pre-formed copper-nickel pipe kits for the MGB GT V8 include all the major pipe runs cut and formed to the original V8 routings, ready to install using the original chassis pipe-clip positions and the original master cylinder, T-piece and brake connection points. Cut lengths are also available for spot repair where only specific sections need renewal.
Service Life
Copper-nickel pipework typically requires no maintenance over its service life beyond visual inspection during routine brake service. The longer service life makes the cost premium over steel readily justifiable on cars being restored for long-term use.
