MGF & TF Brake Lines

Brakes > Hydraulics > Brake Lines

Brake Lines covers the rigid pipe and flexible hose network carrying fluid from the master cylinder and ABS modulator to the calipers, including the flexible hoses at each wheel, the brake pipe components for making up rigid pipe runs, the 3-way connectors and pressure reducing valve, the banjo hardware at the caliper end, and the clips that secure the pipes to the body. Pre-assembled copper pipe replacement kits for the entire vehicle are catalogued under Upgrades & Alternatives; stainless braided hose upgrades are also on the Upgrades page. Flexible Brake Hoses, MGF and MG TF Differ The flexible hoses that connect the rigid pipes to each caliper are different specifications between MGF and MG TF, and the front hoses are handed differently on the two models. On MGF cars, the front hoses are handed LH and RH with different part numbers for each side. On MG TF cars, a single common front hose fits both sides. Rear hoses on both models are non-handed, the same part fits both rear positions, but the MGF and MG TF rear hose specifications themselves are different and are not interchangeable. Rubber brake hoses deteriorate internally with age, with the lining degrading and sometimes acting as a one-way valve that leaves a caliper partially applied. Any hose showing cracking, swelling, or age-related hardening should be replaced regardless of whether it is visibly leaking. Banjo Bolts, Sealing Washers and Hose Fixings Each flexible hose attaches to its caliper via a banjo fitting, secured by a banjo bolt with a sealing copper washer on each side of the fitting, four sealing washers per car. Both the banjo bolt and the sealing washers are catalogued individually and the washers should be renewed rather than reused on any hose removal. At the body end, front hoses are secured by a securing bolt and a self-locking M10 nut, with a small clip retaining the hose in its bracket. The M10 locking nut and the front hose clip are both catalogued individually on this page. Rigid Brake Pipes, Made to Length Rigid brake pipes are not catalogued as pre-assembled items in the lengths required. Instead, the catalogue lists the twelve distinct pipe runs on the car and supplies the components to make them up: copper brake pipe by the metre, and male and female tube nuts in M10 and M12 threads, in brass or steel. Making up brake pipes requires a pipe bending tool and a flaring tool, both catalogued under Brake Tools on the Upgrades & Alternatives page. Owners who prefer a ready-made solution should look at the pre-assembled copper brake pipe kits on that same page, which cover the full vehicle pipe replacement in one package. 3-Way Connectors and Pressure Reducing Valve The brake pipe network includes two 3-way connectors catalogued as a common part used at both front and rear positions, the front connector splits the master cylinder output to the left and right front hoses, and the rear connector splits the rear circuit to the left and right rear hoses. A brake pressure reducing valve sits in the rear circuit to proportion rear brake pressure relative to vehicle loading, preventing premature rear lock-up under light braking. The valve is catalogued as a single service item along with its securing screw. Pipe Clips by Routing Position Several brake pipe clip specifications are catalogued covering different routing positions along the car: under-bonnet clips, lower dash and engine bay clips, underfloor multi-pipe clips, and clips specific to the servo bracket area on RHD-ABS cars. The lower dash clip visible on the live page is the variant introduced at VIN YD522190, fitted to later MGFs and all MG TFs, pre-YD522190 cars used a different clip for the same routing. Damaged or missing clips allow the brake pipes to rub against the body or each other, accelerating corrosion, clips should be inspected and replaced when doing any underfloor brake work.
