Seals

The Classic Mini’s seals do two jobs that often go unappreciated until they fail. They keep weather and road noise out of the cabin and boot, and they protect the bodywork from the water and grit that drive corrosion at every panel join. Seals are typically the cheapest item to replace on a restoration but the one most likely to determine whether the car stays sound long term. Because seal profiles changed across forty-one years of production, the correct part depends on the exact year and body style, using a later-pattern seal on an earlier shell rarely works because the mounting flange, retaining clip arrangement and bonded glass profile all evolved together. Boot Lid Seals The boot lid seal arrangement changed in 1989. Cars built from 1976 to 1989 use a seal that fixes to the boot lid itself with a row of retaining clips along the underside of the lid. From 1989 onwards the seal moved to the back panel aperture instead, and the boot lid was redesigned to delete the seal retaining clip holes. The two systems are not interchangeable, fitting a later seal to an earlier boot lid leaves no way to retain it. Boot lids and back panels for 1976 to 1989 cars used retaining clips along the seal edge, while 1989-on cars have the seal mounted directly to the back panel without clips, the two types are not interchangeable, so confirm the boot lid type before ordering. Always identify which seal mounting system your car uses before ordering. Door Seals Door seal specification depends on body style and production date. Saloon cars from 1976 to 1996 use a one-piece door seal that runs around the full door aperture. A two-piece option is available with separate left-hand upper, right-hand upper, left-hand lower and right-hand lower sections, which can be useful where only part of the seal needs replacing. The Cabriolet (1993 to 1996) uses a specific main and B-post capping seal in left-hand and right-hand. B-post door seals retained by clips, door seal covers, kick-strip retainers and door seal screws are listed separately. Door check arm seals are available in the original rubber type and a later foam type introduced in 1986. Windscreen and Rear Window Seals The windscreen seal changed in 1990. Cars up to 1990 use a narrow-profile seal that accepts either toughened or laminated glass. From 1990 onwards a wider seal was fitted to take laminated glass only. The seal is finished with a Plastichrome filler strip on most models, with a black filler strip used on basic 850 and 1000 models from 1976 to 1980. A bright-finish joint clip secures the filler strip ends. The rear window seal carries the same Plastichrome or black filler strip arrangement, and is supplied to suit clear, heated clear or heated green-tint rear glass. Door Drop Glass and Channel Seals Wind-up door windows from the Mk3 internal-hinge door onwards use a complete sealing arrangement around the drop glass. Front and rear glass run channel seals are available in left-hand and right-hand for the saloon, with separate front and rear specifications for the Cabriolet wind-up windows. The drop glass frame seal seals the upper edge of the glass against the door frame, and the upper glass channel seal in left-hand and right-hand seals the channel itself. Inner and outer door waist seals fit between the door skin and the glass, with the outer waist seals available with original bright ends or later black end caps. Glazing rubber sections seal the glass to its channel. Rear Quarter Window and Quarter Light Seals Saloon rear quarter windows are available in two formats, fixed and opening, and each requires its own seal arrangement. Fixed rear quarter glass uses a body-to-glass seal in clear or green tint specification. Opening rear quarter windows use a complete frame and seal assembly with a separate body-to-frame seal and pivot catch hardware. Both arrangements have specific seal types listed and the correct version must be matched to the rear quarter aperture pressing on your car.
