Classic Mini Gaskets, Grommets & Clips

Gaskets, Grommets & Clips

Gaskets, grommets, clips and fixings are the small components that hold the Classic Mini together at every join, seal every panel-to-panel interface against water ingress, and finish off every body fitting properly. They are individually inexpensive but collectively decisive, a missing handle gasket allows water into the door cavity, a perished hinge gasket lets the door drop on its mountings, a missing bonnet prop clip turns the bonnet into a hazard, and a degraded subframe fitting kit risks structural failure at the most safety-critical mounting points on the car. Replacing these items as a matter of course during a restoration or major service is one of the cheapest ways to keep the car right. Door Handle Gaskets The exterior door handle fits to the door skin with two gaskets, a large gasket and a small gasket, that seal the handle base against water entry into the door cavity. Original specifications differ between Mk1/Mk2 and Mk3-onwards (MkIII) door handles, with the later type using a smaller gasket profile. Both are available, and both should be replaced whenever the door handle is removed for any reason. Using a damaged or missing gasket allows water past the handle into the door cavity, accelerating corrosion of the inner door frame and door skin from the inside out. Door Hinge Gaskets Door hinge gaskets seal between the hinge and the body / door, preventing water ingress at the hinge mounting and providing a small amount of cushioning against the metal-on-metal interface. Large and small versions are available for Classic Mini door hinges from 1959 to 1970, covering the original Mk1 and Mk2 external-hinge door arrangement. Replacing hinge gaskets when the hinges are off the car costs almost nothing and prevents the corrosion that develops at the unsealed hinge plate. Boot Lid Hinge and Handle Gaskets The boot lid hinge mounts through the back panel and uses upper and lower gaskets to seal the hinge plate against the panel and to provide cushioning. Both upper and lower boot lid hinge gaskets are available. The bootlid handle additionally uses a rubber seal between the handle base and the boot lid skin, sealing the handle aperture against water that would otherwise track straight into the boot floor. The handle seal and the hinge gaskets are different parts and should be ordered together when the back panel or boot lid is being refitted. Door Check Strap Seals The door check strap is the link arm that limits how far the door can swing open, and it passes through a sealed aperture in the A-post. Left-hand and right-hand check strap seals for 1970 to 1985 cars seal this aperture against water entry into the A-post. The check strap seal is a frequently overlooked item and is well worth replacing during any door-off work. Bonnet Prop and Release Hardware Bonnet prop clips secure the prop rod at its pivot and stowage points, and replacement clips are available individually as the originals are commonly lost during bonnet removal. The bonnet release cable is available in 1993 to 1996 specification (internal bonnet release) and in 1997-on specification (where the safety catch was relocated to the centre of the bonnet for the new front-mounted radiator front panel). Bonnet prop rods themselves are available separately and are listed by date and Clubman/1275 GT compatibility. Steering Rack to Body Seal The steering rack pinion passes through the toeboard floor and uses a dedicated seal to keep water and road dirt out of the cabin at this point. The seal is a small but important item that frequently fails on older cars, allowing water to track up the steering column into the cabin. Subframe Fitting Kits The subframe fitting kit covers the bolts, washers, captive nuts, mounting rubbers and ancillary fixings required to mount the front or rear subframe to the bodyshell. These mountings are among the most safety-critical fixings on the car, the subframes carry the engine, suspension, steering and brakes, and a fitting kit failure compromises all of them. Subframe fitting kits should be renewed whenever a subframe is removed for any reason and never reused from a heavily corroded car. MGOC Spares Range The MGOC Spares Classic Mini gaskets, grommets and clips range covers door handle gaskets (Mk1/Mk2 large, Mk3 small), door hinge gaskets in large and small for 1959 to 1970 cars, boot lid hinge gaskets (upper and lower), bootlid handle rubber seals, door check strap seals (LH and RH for 1970 to 1985), bonnet prop clips and release cables for 1993 to 1996 and 1997-on specifications, steering rack to body seals, and subframe fitting kits. Also available are the full range of body blanking plugs, grommets in all sizes for cable, hose and pipe pass-throughs, and the associated washers, screws and clips needed to complete any restoration or panel-off repair.
