Classic Mini Seatbelts

Classic Mini Interiors > Seatbelts

Most Classic Minis on the road today have had their seatbelts upgraded at least once across their lifetime, and the original belts (where they survive) are typically due for renewal on age grounds alone, webbing degrades over decades of UV exposure, retraction mechanisms wear, and the bolts and anchorages corrode over forty-plus years of road use. Replacing the seatbelts is one of the most important safety upgrades any Mini owner can make, and is a routine part of any restoration. The MGOC Spares range covers Securon-branded inertia reel and static belts in front and rear specifications, plus a 3-point sports road harness for owners wanting competition-style restraint, all E-marked to current UK road safety legislation. Securon Inertia Reel Front Seatbelts The Securon inertia reel front seatbelt kit is the modern three-point retractable belt that became standard on later Classic Minis and remains the recommended upgrade for any earlier car. The reel locks under sudden deceleration but allows free movement under normal driving, comfortable for everyday use and effective in an impact. Securon inertia reel kits are available in four webbing colours: Black, Beige, Grey and Red, allowing the belt to be matched to the original cabin trim or chosen for visual contrast. Each kit contains the inertia reel mechanism, three-point webbing, buckle and stalk, and the necessary mounting hardware. Fitment uses the standard Classic Mini seatbelt mounting points, outer sill, centre tunnel and upper B-post anchorages, that have been factory-pressed into the bodyshell since the mid-1960s. Securon Static Front Seatbelts The Securon static front seatbelt is the simpler non-retractable three-point belt, adjustable in length but without the inertia reel mechanism. Static belts are the original specification for many earlier Classic Minis and remain a valid choice for owners restoring to factory specification, owners on a budget, or owners who simply prefer the simplicity and reliability of a non-retractable belt with no moving parts to fail. Static belts have no springs, no reel, and nothing inside the mechanism that can degrade with age, for an occasionally-used classic this is genuinely useful. The Securon static front seatbelt fits the standard Mini front seatbelt mounting points. Securon Static Rear Seatbelts The Securon static rear seatbelt in black is the lap belt for the rear seat occupants, fitted to the lower centre tunnel and lower outer sill rear seatbelt mounting points factory-pressed into all Mini saloons in the catalogue scope. The static rear lap belt is the most common rear restraint fitted to Classic Minis, although three-point rear inertia belts are also available for owners requiring a higher specification. 3-Point Road Harness The 3PT Road Harness Mini in black is a competition-style sports harness designed for road use, providing a more positive restraint than the standard inertia or static belt. The road harness is the choice for owners with a tuned engine, sports seats and an active driving style, it holds the driver more firmly in the seat through hard cornering and provides a more direct feel through the steering wheel. The harness is supplied with the necessary fixings to mount to the standard Mini seatbelt anchorages, and is road-legal for UK use when correctly fitted. The harness is not a replacement for a full competition four-point or six-point harness used on track cars, those require additional roll cage anchorage points. Seatbelt Mountings and Pre-Tensioner Floor Distinction The Classic Mini seatbelt mounting arrangement evolved in 1997 with the introduction of pre-tensioner front seatbelts on the MPi cars. The 1997-on main floor includes additional seatbelt mounting reinforcements at the upper rear seatbelt positions to support the pre-tensioner mechanism. Pre-1997 cars use the simpler factory-pressed seatbelt anchorages without the additional reinforcement. The Securon inertia reel and static belts in the MGOC range fit the pre-1997 mounting arrangement directly. Owners retrofitting later seatbelts to earlier cars can use the upper rear seatbelt mounting reinforcement panels (LH and RH) listed in the bodywork section to bring the earlier shell up to the later specification, this requires modification to the seat back, parcel shelf carpet and C-post covers if used on earlier models. Webbing Colour Choice Black is the original factory colour for almost all Classic Mini seatbelts and is the safest choice for cars being restored to factory specification or for owners who simply want the belts to fade into the cabin. Beige is a popular choice for cars with lighter cabin trim, particularly the Light Stone Beige interiors used on the late 1990s Cooper limited editions. Grey is a useful neutral that suits the 1980s and 1990s grey cabin trim schemes.
