MG TD & TF Windscreen, Frame & Fixings

Bodywork > Windscreen, Frame & Fixings

The folding windscreen is one of the great T-series hallmarks, and the TD and TF both carry the traditional flat, upright screen mounted on splayed side stanchions rather than the curved, raked glass of later sports cars. The frame is held in two side stanchions with studs, secured to the scuttle through mounting brackets with wing nuts, cone washers, domed nuts and a rubber-to-scuttle seal. Because the screen folds flat, the upper corners carry combined corner brackets and hood pegs to which the hood front is secured by wing bolts, an arrangement that integrates the screen with the weather equipment. Glass Identification by Chassis Number Laminated windscreen glass is catalogued in three distinct specifications, and the chassis number determines which is correct. Early TD cars to chassis number 22314, those with the side-mounted wiper motor, take one glass; TD cars from chassis number 22315, with the centre-mounted wiper motor, take another; and the TF takes a third, model-specific laminated glass. This is the critical ordering distinction in the section, and the chassis number should always be checked before ordering a screen. Frame Hardware and Fixings The supporting hardware is comprehensive. Side stanchions are supplied complete with studs in right- and left-hand forms, with separate upper and lower stanchion studs available. Glazing rubber seals the glass into the frame, and a windscreen frame screw kit (containing 26 screws) covers the frame assembly, including the six chrome stanchion-to-screen screws. Upper and lower corner brackets, the hood-to-corner-bracket wing bolts, side tapping plates, mounting brackets, bracket-to-scuttle pad sets, distance pieces and locking domed nuts are all catalogued individually, allowing a complete frame to be rebuilt from bare components. Period and Touring Options For owners seeking the authentic competition look, a faithful replica Brooklands-style aeroscreen is offered complete with fixings. A green-tinted Plexiglass sun visor is also available as a practical period accessory, fitted to the windscreen frame using chrome brackets without drilling. The 'Auster' windscreen-frame badge, with its securing rivets, completes an authentic restoration. Ordering Considerations Establish the model and, for the TD, the chassis number, as windscreen glass changed twice across the range. Confirm right- or left-hand stanchion requirements, and note that chrome-plated brackets benefit from protective treatment before fitting to preserve the finish.
