Electrical > Electronic Ignition Units

Electronic ignition conversion is one of the most worthwhile upgrades available to any classic MG running points ignition. The original Lucas points-and-condenser system works correctly when properly set up but has several fundamental limitations, the points contacts wearing progressively and requiring periodic gap adjustment and eventual renewal, the condenser being a wear item that can fail intermittently or completely without warning, and the mechanical timing accuracy being limited by the points-cam interface, which produces small variations in spark timing across the rev range. Electronic ignition eliminates all three issues at one stroke and is among the most cost-effective improvements available, giving improved starting, consistent spark timing, and freedom from regular points service, while being reversible to standard at any time. How Electronic Ignition Works Electronic ignition replaces the points contacts inside the Lucas distributor with a solid-state trigger, typically a Hall-effect sensor or an optical trigger, that detects the position of a small magnet or rotating disc carried by the distributor shaft, signalling the coil to fire exactly as the points would have done. The difference is that the solid-state trigger has no mechanical contact, no wear surfaces, and no rubbing block that wears down over time, so it maintains its accuracy across the working life of the conversion, needs no periodic adjustment, and produces consistent timing regardless of engine speed. The conversion uses the original distributor body, the original rotor arm with the renewed red rotor being the appropriate choice, the original distributor cap, and the original mechanical advance mechanism, so only the internal trigger mechanism changes, preserving the engine's original advance characteristics. The Principal Brands Three principal brands cover the electronic-ignition retrofit market for classic British cars. Accuspark is a well-established British brand offering a budget-friendly direct-fit Hall-effect kit that drops into the existing Lucas distributor and suits most standard classic-MG applications. Lumenition is the established premium brand, offering the Magnetronic Hall-effect system as an entry-level option concealed within the distributor with only two wires to connect, and the higher-specification Optronic system using an infrared optical trigger that gives very consistent switching precision regardless of distributor shaft wear, with a matched high-output coil and amplifier available for fast-road and competition use. Sparkrite offers two approaches, a points-assisted system where the original points remain in place but are used only as a low-current trigger for an amplifier that switches the coil electronically, keeping the factory points as the timing reference while removing the electrical load that burns them, and a triggerless system that uses the distributor cam itself as the trigger. The Lumenition switch from points-plus-condenser to a contactless trigger is particularly valued for eliminating the condenser failure mode entirely, a well-known problem given the short service life of many modern replacement condensers. Installation & Compatibility Installation is straightforward, the distributor cap and rotor arm removed, the points and condenser removed from the distributor body, the electronic unit fitted in their place, and the wiring connected to the coil, after which the engine timing is set using a stroboscopic timing light rather than statically. Conversion kits are distributor-type-specific, so whether the car has the 25D4, 25D6, 35D8, or 45D4 distributor must be confirmed before ordering, and the coil must be checked for compatibility, as the units typically require a coil above a minimum primary resistance and the system must be checked for the presence of a ballast resistor, which determines the correct connection method. Many of the kits are negative-earth only, suiting the cars converted to negative earth, while positive-earth options are available for cars retaining the original polarity, and the conversion can be reversed if needed by removing the electronic unit and refitting the original points and condenser, though for most owners it is a one-way step that dramatically improves the long-term reliability of the ignition system.
