Electrical > Sparkrite

Sparkrite is the third principal brand in the classic-car electronic-ignition retrofit market, offering an alternative product range alongside the Accuspark and Lumenition options. The Sparkrite kits use their own approach to the electronic-trigger conversion, with specific design choices that some owners prefer over the alternatives. Sparkrite SX4000, Electronic Ignition Around the Original Points The headline MGOC Sparkrite product is the Sparkrite SX4000 ignition module, designed to work in conjunction with the original contact-breaker points rather than replacing them. The SX4000 takes the low-current switching action from the original points and uses it to trigger the high-current coil switching electronically, offering the benefits of electronic ignition (constant dwell, no points burning, more consistent spark timing across the rev range) while overcoming the pitfalls of a complete points-removal conversion (loss of the visible points-gap setting, dependency on a single electronic module without the option to revert to original-equipment operation on the roadside). The original points remain in place as a switching reference and a fall-back. The Sparkrite Approach Sparkrite electronic-ignition systems use a magnetic-trigger arrangement similar in principle to the Accuspark approach but with their own specific implementation details, the trigger sensor specification, the shutter or magnet ring design, and the wiring approach to the coil all reflect Sparkrite's particular engineering choices. The result is a kit that fits into existing Lucas distributors in the same way as the Accuspark kit, with the trigger replacing the original points-and-condenser arrangement and the wiring connecting to the existing coil. The conversion preserves the existing distributor body, cap, rotor arm, advance mechanism and shaft, only the internal trigger mechanism changes. Installation and Compatibility Sparkrite installation follows the same principle as the other electronic-conversion brands. The distributor cap and rotor arm are removed, the original points and condenser are removed from the distributor body, the Sparkrite trigger components are fitted in their place, and the wiring is connected to the coil. The specific installation details, the base-plate orientation, the magnet-ring or shutter alignment, the wiring polarity, are documented in the kit's installation instructions and may differ in detail from the equivalent Accuspark or Lumenition installation. After installation, the engine timing is set with a strobe timing light using the standard procedure with the kit's specific recommendations for initial setup. Choice Between Brands The choice between Accuspark, Lumenition and Sparkrite is principally a personal one. Accuspark offers the most cost-effective option for owners who want the basic benefits of electronic ignition (no points wear, no periodic adjustment) without paying for the premium features. Lumenition offers the premium optical-trigger approach with its specific advantages for accuracy and long-term reliability. Sparkrite offers an alternative engineering approach for owners who prefer the brand or who have had positive experience with Sparkrite products on other applications. Each brand has its supporters in the classic-car community, and each will deliver the principal benefits of electronic ignition compared with the original points-and-condenser system. The technical team is available to advise on the right brand and specification for a specific car, with appropriate consideration of the owner's budget, intended use, and any preferences based on previous experience with the brands.
